Meet Our Volunteers
Trudi
How long have you been volunteering with SBC Volunteer Centre?
Since September 2001. I was one of the first volunteers to start when the Centre first opened.
What was your first job in the Jewish Community?
Previous to the Volunteer Centre opening, I stuffed envelopes at the JNF, helped with mail-outs for the Vancouver Holocaust Centre, and assisted in the Isaac Waldman Library.

My Personal Life (edited by Judy Stern)
I was born and grew up in South Africa . I lived in a suburb of Johannesburg . I was born profoundly deaf from the German measles. I attended King David School . I had a difficult time to understand the teacher as everyone else in the class could hear. So I transferred to another school called St Vincent School for the Deaf which was easier for me and I learned South African sign language. In 1988 I went to the Art Foundation College for graphic design for one year. We did everything by hand as there were no computers at that time. I had been working at various graphic design jobs from 1995.

Intergenerational Landed Learning Project at the UBC Farm
The Volunteer Centre at Shalom BC is welcoming and accessible and I have appreciated their support. Partnering with the Centre helped connect our project (the Intergenerational Landed Learning Project at the UBC Farm) with passionate and compassionate seniors and other volunteers who contribute their time, knowledge, and care to the children of our project. The children have had so much fun growing their own food and eating the food they grow. The relationships that are formed are priceless.
